Their Dream
A local foodbank was trying to serve the community, but they were stuck without the right infrastructure. They were operating out of an old, mobile school unit and needed a new, functional, and efficient building. The new building had to be carefully designed to handle the immense weight of heavy-duty shelving, canned goods, and commercial fridges and freezers. All while keeping construction costs as low as possible. This pro-bono project had two challenges: building it right and getting multiple stakeholders aligned on the plans.
Our Approach
We designed a building that was tough enough for the job. We worked closely with civil engineers to design a reinforced structure capable of handling the weight of heavy-duty inventory.
We took the lead on communication between seven different groups of stakeholders to get unstuck. This included the foodbank's board of directors, fire station volunteers, municipal and permitting officials, multiple engineering firms, excavation contractors, and helical pile contractors.
The Wins
Our biggest win was getting this crucial community project out of the permitting phase that they were stuck in to getting the foundation work scheduled to start. We delivered a smart, safe, structurally integral, and bespoke design that catered to their unique needs. We proactively suggested and redesigned elements several times to help save the non-profit on construction costs. We navigated the complex bylaw and structural issues by facilitating clear communication, so everyone was on the same page.
